Detection of Sexual Problems by Family Medicine Residents: Effect of a Sex Education Program

Abstract
This study documents the clinical behavior of family medicine residents in detecting their patients' sexual problems before and after exposure to a teaching program in sexuality. Two groups of residents were studied: the experimental group was exposed to all aspects of the teaching program; the control group lacked this exposure. Mean rates of case detection were determined for each group for each of three defined time periods over the seventeen months of the study. There was a significant trend of increasing mean rates for the experimental group (p < .005) with the greatest increase in rates related to a weekend sexual enrichment seminar. No significant changes in rates were noted for the controls.
