Abstract
BERIBERI obviously is not a disappearing disease, but the pattern of incidence has changed. Shöshin beriberi is probably not an uncommon disease in the United States, but the few reports in the English literature indicate that it is rarely diagnosed.Cardiac beriberi is arbitrarily divided into the acute fulminant form and the chronic type. Shöshin beriberi is the fulminant form of beriberi heart disease, which is characterized by acute cardiovascular collapse. Death may occur within hours.
