The Kinematics of H II Regions in the Small Magellanic Cloud

Abstract
Radial velocities, from H α measurements, are given for 15 SMC H II regions. There is good agreement with the most intense 21-cm peaks in each case and a marked velocity gradient across the SMC. Nine H II regions in the core of the SMC have a low velocity dispersion (7.2 ± 2.1 (s.e.) km s –1 ). The 21-cm profiles have a much higher velocity dispersion in this region and this suggests that the H II regions are confined to the regions of highest H I density.Keywords
