Injuries in Karate—A Case for Medical Control

Abstract
The injuries sustained in the 1st European Knock-down Karate Championships in 1978 are described. Of the 70 competitors, 37 sustained an injury. Of these, 15 are potentially serious: head injuries, trunk injuries and hematomata compressing the fascial compartments of the limbs. Fights were well controlled by the referees, but protective padding should be used and wood breaking for further advancement in the competition should be of less importance. Attendance of a medical officer is mandatory.
