Abstract
This paper is an examination of issues associated with biomass energy resources in a number of Asian less-developed countries. The role of these resources in the energy economies of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand is outlined; problems associated with the sustained supply of these fuels are identified; and the broader developmental context of this resource use is discussed. Brief summaries of the position in each country are presented, and it is argued that the forms taken by problems associated with the ‘alternative energy crisis’ vary significantly both within and between the countries studied. The policy implications of this are identified, and it is concluded that policy formulation must take account of local patterns of resource production and utilisation if viable solutions are to be generated.
