Abstract
The Great Scar Limestone in the Settle district and near the Stainmore syncline has been studied in eight representative sections. The sequence of D1 age in this area is divided by pronounced master bedding planes into nine lithological cycles, which can be traced from section to section.Fossils are concentrated near the master bedding planes and indications of increased current activity are recorded. The regularity with which the master bedding planes occur suggests a climatic rather than tectonic control of the cycles. Keywords
