Low-loss optical directional coupler on InP

Abstract

We demonstrate a low-loss 3dB directional coupler for use in balanced coherent receivers for lightwave communications. The device exhibits 1.6–1.7 dB insertion loss and better than 52:48 splitting ratio at 1.54μm wavelength.
