TEXSYS: a large scale demonstration of model-based real-time control of a space station subsystem

Abstract
Recent tests are discussed of the Thermal Expert System (TEXSYS) for control of the Boeing Aerospace Thermal Bus System (BATBS), a prototype two-phase Space Station Freedom thermal bus. The authors first present a brief architectural overview of the system. They next provide a technical description of the original approach to the control and fault detection, isolation and recovery issues confronted by TEXSYS. They then discuss key architectural and representational tradeoffs made, along with significant problems encountered. TEXSYS test results show the successful completion of both nominal control and fault recovery actions with the BATBS.
