Electrodissolution Kinetics of Iron in Chloride Solutions

Abstract
The dissolution kinetics of iron in acidic chloride media has been investigated by potentiostatic polarization. An anodic Tafel slope of approximately 70 mV/decade was obtained. An increase in the chloride ion concentration, at a constant pH, increased the dissolution rate of iron. The following empirical rate expressions for iron dissolution and hydrogen evolution have been determined from the experimental data The rate expression for iron dissolution can be developed theoretically by a mechanism which includes the direct participation of chloride ions in the dissolution of iron.
