Abstract
Daily rainfall data from dense networks, such as in basins being used for research, are commonly analysed using standard statistical procedures. A short description of some of the techniques is given, along with some comments on these. When measures of the spatial average and the spatial variability are considered, a distinction is made between the requirements for their use in a descriptive way or in any statistical sense. Correlation analysis of rainfall data is dealt with particularly. Its use for obtaining a generalized quantitative assessment of the extent of ‘spottiness’ of rainfall is discussed. Keywords
