Abstract
The influence of water, oxygen, and nitrogen contamination on the surface chemistry of lithium in γ‐butyrolactone (BL) solutions was studied. Both water and oxygen contamination in BL solutions seem to have a pronounced effect on surface films formed in the Li‐BL systems because they react with lithium to form hydroxide or oxides that attack BL nucleophilically. Nitrogen contamination seems to have a marginal (if any) effect on the surface chemistry of the Li‐BL system in spite of the fact that BL is reactive with lithium nitride.
