Abstract
Six dogs were studied following bilateral paravertebral ganglionectomy and denervation of the adrenal glands. After the operation systolic pressure and pulse rates were within the normal range while diastolic pressure tended to be at the lower limits of normal. During fasts of from 3 to 6 weeks duration blood pressure did not show the fall characteristic of normal dogs but remained the same, or more often, rose above the control level. The pulse rate decreased. When fasted normal dogs were fed a luxus consumption high carbohydrate diet, systolic pressure and pulse rate rose significantly above fasting and control values while diastolic pressure was normal or low. When fasted sympathectomized dogs were similarly realimented the blood pressure remained at the fasting level but the pulse rate rose. When luxus consumption diets of horse meat or casein were fed to sympathectomized dogs the blood pressure remained at or below the fasting value. Keywords
