Abstract
The crystal structure and some properties of the LnAlB14 compounds (Ln=Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, Lu) isotypic with MgAlB14 are considered. Some conditions essential for the occurrence of these compounds in the ternary Ln‐B‐Al systems are described. The preparation of single crystals of a new compound YAlB14 as well as of ErAlB14‐based mixed crystals with partial substitution of Cr,Fe,Y, and Ce for Er or Al is reported. Experimental data evidencing for the occurrence of homogeneity regions for HoAlB14 and ErAlB14 are presented. Finally, some general crystal‐chemical trends for all presently known binary and ternary compounds of the MgAlB14 structure type are briefly discussed.
