Abstract
Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat have been performed for La1-yTbyAg for Tb concentrations in the per cent range in the nonsuperconducting state. The crystal field (CF) states and the CF splitting of Tb3+ in this compound were derived and agree favourably with those calculated from neutron data on paramagnetic Y0.8Er0.2Ag, PrAg, HoAg and TmAg. The superconducting transition temperatures of La1-yTbyAg compounds were measured and are understood in terms of the theory for superconductors containing impurities with CF split states. Keywords
