Abstract

Six [female] chimpanzees were observed for 8 weeks as they lived in all possible pairings. Social and non-social behavior was studied between animals within the same cage and between animals in adjacent cages. Of all forms of social behavior studied only the grooming behavior was related with dominance as determined in food tests[long dash]the subordinate groomed the dominant more often than the reverse.
