Abstract
If plots of different treatments mature at different times it is difficult to harvest the plots in a comparable manner; there is usually therefore a bias in the estimates of differences in treatment yields. An attempt is made to assess the magnitude of this bias by considering a simple theoretical model of the way in which a crop matures and is growing at the time of harvest. The expected yield with various harvest timings is determined. A general discussion of the choice of harvest times is given making use of the theoretical results. Lettuce harvesting is chosen as an example, but the model should help in deciding the timing of harvests of many horticultural crops. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
