A Study of Optimum Operation by Voltage Mode Control for Solar Photovoltaic Systems

Abstract
The optimum operating conditions of solar cell modules for photovoltaic systems have been studied by acquiring complete field operation data for two kinds of modules during a period of more than 1 year. The annual output energy from a CZ Si solar cell module under maximum output conditions is 1284 Wh/Wp/year and that of an EFG ribbon Si module is 1117 Wh/Wp/year in Osaka, Japan. The difference between the annual output under fixed voltage operation and that under maximum output operation conditions is 31.35 Wh/Wp/year for the CZ module and 41.44 Wh/Wp/year for the EFG module, respectively. If the operating voltage is adjusted every month to the optimum value, these differences can be greatly reduced to 15.42 Wh/Wp/year (CZ) and 20.29 Wh/Wp/year (EFG). It has been shown that an optimum operation of a solar array can be realized by adjusting parametric changes in the photovoltaic performances using the cell temperature and insolation intensity.
