Abstract
Lethal temps. were ascertained by immersing mature rats to the shoulders in waters of constant temp. The median lethal water temp. was 14.8[degree] + 0.5[degree]C (stand. dev.) for an exposure of 2 hrs. The colonic temp., measured continuously by thermocouples and recording potentiometer, then averaged 15.1[degree]C. Death sometimes occurred hrs. after apparent recovery with spontaneous rewarming. No factor was found to modify the lethal temp. of the anterior regions of unanesthetized rats. The factors tested were: age above 1 month, season, body size, sex, rates of cooling; admns. of glucose, cortin, digitalis, or oxygen; deprivations of food or of water; acclimatization to cold air. Resistance of critical tissues appears not to have been modified in rats by any controlled procedure. Keywords
