Abstract
Urban family structures In the Republic of South Africa A serious debate in family sociology centers around whether the nuclear family is the only legitimate family structure in industrial society, or whether legitimate alternative structures exist To answer this question a survey on family structures in urban areas amongst the four population groups was undertaken. Owing to differences in cultural, historical and political background, the results show vast differences in family structure amongst the various population groups. Even so, the overwhelming majority of respondents views the nuclear family as the ideal family structure. Keywords
