Biologic Factors in the Sexual Transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus

Abstract
What are the chances of acquiring or transmitting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) during sexual activity? What factors facilitate or impede transmission? These are two of the questions most commonly encountered by infectious diseases clinicians who care for patients exposed to AIDS and all forms of other sexually transmitted diseases. Dr. Harold W. Jaffe and his colleagues at the Epidemiology Branch of the Centers for Disease Control's AIDS Program have done a truly remarkable job in unraveling the complexities of the biologic factors that influence transmission of HIV. In this AIDS Commentary they give us an up-to-date analysis of this important area.
