Abstract
Molecular electronics is a vision of the future, with very real promise. In some senses, it is already here. Transistors are available in which the active layer has a thickness of the order of 10 nm, comparable to the wavelength of thermal charge carriers and to the linear dimensions of many biomolecules (1,2). Input and output transducers are available in which molecular materials and processes play a vital role (3). However, molecular electronics, in the sense of data processing networks whose functional elements are of molecular size in all dimensions, has not yet arrived.
