Abstract
All of the new GCSE Biology syllabuses require internal assessment of practical work. The details of the practical assessment requirements of the examining groups are surveyed and discussed. The problems of interpreting the principle of positive achievement in practice do not appear to be fully resolved. A subsequent article will consider how to implement practical assessment in biology departments and the implications for the teaching of biology in secondary schools. Keywords
