Abstract
ProbenecidProbenecid is a benzoic acid derivative with the structural formula shown in Figure 3. Its chief features in the treatment of chronic gout are listed in Table 4. It is a potent uricosuric agent.64 It has been shown that normally 90 per cent or more of the uric acid filtered by the glomeruli is reabsorbed by the renal tubules,65 , 66 and this is true even when plasma values are very much elevated.12, 64 , 67 This transport system can be effectively depressed64 , 68 by probenecid, and, as a result, the urinary excretion of urate is greatly enhanced.The drug is rapidly and effectively absorbed from the . . .Keywords
