On-Line Scheimpflug Imaging and Its Potential for in vivo Examination of Cornea and Lens

Abstract
On-line imaging of the anterior segments of the eye has several advantages compared to conventional off-line techniques. A charge coupled device (CCD) matrix camera was positioned in the image plane of a Topcon SL-45 Scheimpflug camera. The matrix camera produces single images (512×512 pixels) and which are stored in the memory of a PC, triggered by the flash. With this configuration an area of 7.4 × 10.9 μm of the object is projected onto 1 pixel with 256 gray levels. The gray levels in 1 pixel line represents a densitometric reading with an up to 35-fold better spatial resolution compared to standard microdensitometry of Scheimpflug photographs. This technique is also advantageous with small animal eyes. In addition, image processing by means of look-up tables are possible, and densitometry along segments of circles can be performed.
