Earthworms and Agricultural Management

Abstract
Earthworms can have a major impact on the rhizosphere by their feeding, casting, and burrowing activities. Although earthworms are relatively large compared with the average diameter of roots of many agricultural crops, they can significantly alter the root rhizosphere as well as bulk soil properties. These impacts have often been overlooked in modern rowcrop agriculture in the United States, but greater interest in reduced tillage systems and concern about agricultural sustainability have prompted researchers and farmers to again consider the potential role of the earthworm. The excellent books by Lee (1985) and Edwards and Lofty (1977) discuss earthworm biology and ecology in great detail, and readers should consult them for more information.
