Abstract
Small and large liposomes containing ricin or ricin A-chain (a toxic subunit of ricin) and having monoclonal anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) antibodies on the surface were prepared, and their effects on CEA-producing tumor cells, were examined in order to evaluate the efficacy of these liposomes as drug delivery systems. It was found that the large unilamellar liposomes (average diameter : 3000 Å) could not be internalized by the tumor cells, but were ruptured after specific binding to tumor cells through the monoclonal antibodies on the surface. On the other hand, the small unilamellar liposomes (average diameter : 800 Å) were found to be easily internalized by tumor cells. Keywords
