Abstract
The patch test results of patch tests with a standard series of patch test substances by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group between 1985 and 1989 were examined with respect to the concordance between the responses observed at the first and second patch test readings. Varying lack of concordance was observed between the two readings for different test substances. When the readings were compared to the “final interpretation” arrived at, isolated positives at the first reading, as well as second reading, were not infrequently considered to be true positives. Many early responses to certain test substances were not finally considered to represent true positives and were not sustained in the second patch test observation. Our data indicates that two observations of patch test responses should be performed to ensure valid interpretation of the response. Keywords
