Abstract
Ten molds, three yeasts, and 44 bacteria were screened for the noninductive metabolism of itaconic acid by growing in complete media containing traces of C -labeled itaconic acid. Several Salmonella and Pseudomonas species incorporated significant quantities of radioactivity into their cellular components. The enzymatic conversion of itaconic acid to citramalic acid was demonstrated in cell-free extracts from both P. aeruginosa and S. chittagong. Keywords
