NONINDUCTIVE METABOLISM OF ITACONIC ACID BY PSEUDOMONAS AND SALMONELLA SPECIES

Abstract
Ten molds, three yeasts, and 44 bacteria were screened for the noninductive metabolism of itaconic acid by growing in complete media containing traces of C -labeled itaconic acid. Several Salmonella and Pseudomonas species incorporated significant quantities of radioactivity into their cellular components. The enzymatic conversion of itaconic acid to citramalic acid was demonstrated in cell-free extracts from both P. aeruginosa and S. chittagong.
