Studies on the Cytotoxic Activity of Human Lymphoid Cells Activated by Concanavalin A

Abstract
Human lymphoid cells were rendered cytotoxic to chicken erythrocytes by stimulation with concanavalin A (Con A). In contrast to phytohemagglutinin (PHA), Con A required continuous presence during incubation in order to induce a strong cytotoxic response. Removal of adherent cells, including B lymphocytes, by passage through nylon-wool columns, virtually abolished the response to Con A, while the PHA-induced cytotoxicity was still considerable. The capacity of lymphocytes to mediate a cytotoxic effect in the presence of Con A was found to be depressed in five hypogammaglobulinemic patients lacking B lymphocytes, suggesting possible participation of this lymphocyte population in Con A-induced cytotoxicity.
