Abstract
The customer access available in today'sIntegratedServices Digital Network (IMS) provides the means to integrate circuit switching andpacket switching into the public switched network (PSN) via several arrangements. These include metallic loops (23+D), PCMfacffities (23B +D, 30B +D), universal digital loop carrier (2B+D), and remote switching units(211+D, 2,3B+D, 30B+D). In thefuture, demandsfor service will be made instantaneous byproviding both newdigital loop carrier arrangements andnew remote switching arrangements integrated into a local digital switch. These can be combined with Digital Cross Connect Systems, Digital Multiplexers, and fiber optic transport systems to form a distributed network with a unjWed operating environ ment for the provision of all customer servicesfrom the narrow band to the broadband. The paper will illustrate these new access arrangements fo ,g both narrowband and broadband facilities using the 5ESS' Switch in combination with SLC* Crrierproducts and DACS products. Keywords
