Abstract
A simple formula, based on Kerr's (1967), is proposed for estimating the number of sex alleles in a panmictic honeybee population. Only the mutation rate and the number of colonies need be known. Values are in agreement with those obtained by other methods, especially with a mutation rate of 10−5. The only exception is the population on Kangaroo Island, S. Australia (Woyke, 1976), which is not considered to be a panmictic unity. Keywords
