Use of Frozen-Stored Red Cells

Abstract
To the Editor: In the article entitled "Current Status of Red-Cell Preservation and Availability in Relation to the Developing National Blood Policy" (N Engl J Med 291:68–74, 1974) the authors stated that "premature and misguided public espousal of frozen-stored red cells as the preferred product for transfusion could prove extremely costly and disruptive." This point of view has not been substantiated by our recent experience. We have found this approach to be neither extremely costly nor disruptive, and, consequently, we do not consider the decision to use such a system either premature or misguided.Starting in July, 1973, we began . . .
