Abstract
Athero-arteriosclerosis was produced in dogs by performing a total thyroidectomy and supplementing the diet with a high-cholesterol intake and large amounts of vitamin D. Segments of the femoral and carotid arteries were excised and replaced with autogenous venous grafts. Well-marked athero-arteriosclerotic lesions developed in the arterial system, but none developed in the venous grafts, which showed a marked tendency to develop mural thrombi. These results indicate that autogenous venous grafts, when inserted into the arterial system, are relatively resistant to the development of athero-arteriosclerosis.Keywords
