Attachment of the haptera of Laminaria digitata (Huds.) Lamour

Abstract
Laboratory cultures of young haptera of L. digitata on a variety of substrata, followed by examination with Scanning electron microscopy, have shown that the outer meristoderm cells when in contact with a solid object, grow out into rhizoidal cells. These cells fill every microscopic crevice until an exact impression of the profile of the substratum is built up. They secrete abundant mucilage which may act as the bonding agent, both to adjoining rhizoidal cells and to the substratum.
