Abstract
Seeds of barley grass (Hordeum murinum L.) were sown on, and up to 100 mm below, the soil surface. Seedling emergence was slower from seed sown on the surface than from seed sown just below the surface. Emergence was equally good from seed sown just beneath the surface and from that sown 25 mm deep. Greater depths of sowing caused a progressive decline in successful seedling emergence. The proportion of seeds germinating was equal at all depths, but neither coleoptile nor leaves reached the surface from deeply sown seed.
