Treatment of Bleeding Esophageal Varices with Somatostatin

Abstract
To the Editor: The intravenous administration of somatostatin, a naturally occurring tetradecapeptide, has recently been shown to reduce mesenteric and portal blood flow drastically, with no concomitant effect on cardiac output and arterial pressure (Thulin L, Samnegård H, Andreen M, et al: unpublished data). Because of this effect we thought it worthwhile to try the drug in the treatment of bleeding esophageal varices as an alternative to the traditional use of vasopressin and the Sengstaken-Blakemore tube.A 67-year-old man with no previous history of peptic ulcer or esophageal varices had massive bleeding of approximately 2000 ml from the upper gastrointestinal . . .
