Abstract
Retinol esterification was demonstrated in vivo and in vitro in lamb kidney. Retinol labeled with 3H injected into the renal artery of lambs appeared in the labeled retinyl ester fraction in the renal vein. Degree of tracer incorporation into retinyl esters increased with vitamin A intake. In homogenates, activity was concentrated in microsomes and enhanced 4-fold by addition of ATP and CoA to the incubation mixture. The esterification may be a function of fatty acyl CoA:retinol acyl transferase. Renal esterification may play a role in retinol homeostasis. This publication has 15 references indexed in Scilit:
