The Polyanthelmintic Action of Dithiazanine Iodide

Abstract
Summary and Conclusions The polyanthelmintic efficacy of dithiazanine iodide was proved in the treatment of nematode infections which are most prevalent in Guatemala: Ascaris, Trichuris, Uncinaria, and Strongyloides. Dithiazanine iodide was found to be effective in 80% of the cases infected with Hymenolepis nana. Among cestodes H. nana has the greatest incidence in Guatemala. The therapeutic results obtained in cases of Taenia saginata and Hymenolepis diminuta were not satisfactory. Cooperation from the patients was excellent; the cases rejected in this evaluation because of failure to complete the course of treatment was less than 5%. The polyvermicidal action of dithiazanine iodide permits an effective treatment of single or multiple infections in ambulatory patients attending public health dispensaries and in those treated in private practice. Emphasis should be placed on the fact that for an adequate anthelmintic treatment, it is necessary to carry out quantitative examinations of feces. We prefer the Stoll technic because of its simplicity and accuracy.
