Abstract
The effects of a three hour colchicine treatment on the passage of cells through the mitotic cycle in apical meristems of lateral roots of Vicia faba have been investigated. Colchicine was found to lengthen the duration of the mitotic cycle with time following treatment. This increase was largely due to a gradual increase in the duration of Gl. Colchicine treatment also progressively shortened the duration of the S period after treatment. The proportions of cells with long and short cycle times and quiescent cells were determined in both control and colchicine treated roots. Colchicine treatment caused an increase in the proportion of proliferating cells which had a short cycle time though there was no change in the mean cycle time of all cells in the root apex over the period of the experiment.
