Contribution à l’étude du porc-épic Hystrix indica indica Kerr, 1792 (Rodentia)

Abstract
H. indica indica, which is still found in Lebanon, shows a slight sexual dimorphism. The food it consumes is varied and resembles that of farm animals, more precisely that of pigs. Mating is preceded by a sort of prenuptial parade during which the male spreads its spines. The gestation duration has not yet been well determined, although it seems to last 3 mo. Litter size is between 2-4. There are 2 breeding seasons/yr in the spring and autumn; with a possible 3rd in summer. Females become sexually mature when 2 yr old, nothing is yet known about males. The young are nursed 2 at a time since only 2 pectoral, lateral mammary glands are functional. Nursing can last to wk. The young hide under the body of their mother or father. They are born with eyes open, and body covered with soft hairs. They can move easily.
