Abstract
Sympathetic ganglion block with procaine has been used on 22 patients with herpes zoster with prompt relief of symptoms in 75% of the cases and complete relief of symptoms in the remaining 5 following a 2d sympathetic block. Complete relief of pain and rapid drying of vesicles was experienced by all patients. Two patients with post herpetic neuralgia of several weeks'' duration were treated, one with sympathetic block and the other with tetra-ethyl-ammonium chloride, with good results in both. Seven patients with Bell''s palsy were treated by stellate ganglion block with 5 cases showing marked improvement with rapid clearing of paralysis, 2 patients received no relief from repeated block. Regional sympathetic nerve block is a simple and safe procedure which can usually be performed in the out-patient clinic. Its use in the treatment of certain painful syndromes is advocated and is the procedure of choice in the treatment of herpes zoster. Keywords
