Abstract
The synthesis, liquid‐crystal transition temperatures, and some physical properties of a variety of substituted phenyl ethers, most of which incorporate a lateral substituent, are reported. Many of the liquid crystals described exhibit nematic phases with negative dielectric anisotropy at elevated temperatures. The relationship between the nature of the lateral substituents and the observed liquid crystal phases and transition temperatures is discussed. Keywords
