Abstract
A coincidence experiment is described in which an attempt is made to detect fissions of uranium nuclei resulting from the capture of negative μ-mesons in the cosmic radiation. The result shows that fission is not the most probable process following meson capture, and an upper limit of 0·25 is set for the probability of this fission process occurring. A interpretation of the result is suggested in terms of the competition between fission and neutron emission in the protoactinium isotope 238Pa which is formed in the capture process. Keywords
