219. Note: A Deficiency in the Summation of Chi Procedure

Abstract
The so-called ''summation of chi procedure'' for combining evidence from several contingency tables does not properly take into account the size of the individual supporting studies or experiments. Examples are given where its use results in reduced significance even though the additional data strongly support the results of an earlier larger study. This difficulty does not arise when the Mantel-Haenszel summary chi square procedure is based.
