Abstract
Undifferentiated suspension cultures of Dioscorea deltoidea were examined for the presence of sterols and sapogenins. The isolated sterol mixture from the tissue culture contained stigmasterol, sitosterol, and campesterol as determined by gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Diosgenin was identified as the only sapogenin produced by this culture. 25D–Spirostan–3,5–diene was also isolated and identified. This latter material apparently occurs as an artifact which is formed during the hydrolysis and isolation of the diosgenin. No other steroids ivere detected. Keywords
