Abstract
Inoculation of adult hamsters with > 1.5 .times. 102 herpesvirus type 2 (HSV-2) transformed hamster embryo fibroblasts induced rapidly growing tumors at the site of inoculation in more than 50% of animals. The tumors were examined by light microscopy and EM, and were histologically anaplastic fibrosarcomas. Lung metastases were frequently found in tumor-bearing animals; these were usually only seen microscopically, and were cytologically similar to the primary tumors. The nature of tumor development showed similarities with naturally occurring tumors of man, and HSV-2 tumor is probably a better model of human cancer than other virus-induced tumors studied in the past. This publication has 19 references indexed in Scilit:
