Abstract
Results of winter measurements of temperature and salinity of coastal water south of the Kaikoura Peninsula are given and discussed. The distributions of these properties are correlated with the presence of subsurface tongues of Subtropical Water which extend into the Kaikoura Canyon to be mixed there with waters derived from river outflow. This mixed water discharges seawards over the deepest part of the canyon, which is continuous with the Hikurangi Trench. The resulting thermocline structures are discussedKeywords
