OCCURRENCE AND WINTER SURVIVAL OF JOHNSON GRASS (SORGHUM HALEPENSE) IN ONTARIO

Abstract
Recorded infestations of Johnson grass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.) in Ontario increased from 3 in 1971 to about 20 in 1978. All examined plants grew from seed, except in Brant County where regrowth from overwintered rhizomes occurred in 1978. Winter survival may have been due to deep, continuous snow cover or to a founder effect.
