Indoor radio environment considerations in selecting a media access control protocol for wideband radio data communications

Abstract
The effects of the indoor environment on digital signal propagation are examined from the perspective of transmitting high bit rate bursty computer file data. The nature of channel outage occurrence and the effectiveness of techniques such as forward error correction and trellis code modulation in combating errors generated by a multipath channel are discussed. Having identified the important characteristics of data corruption in the multipath channel, a suitable media access control protocol is suggested, which makes best utilization of these characteristics, and is robust, so that it recovers quickly from the sudden loss of a link with a minimum waste of bandwidth.Keywords
