A LONGITUDINAL STUDY ON ANTIBODIES to MEASLES and RUBELLA VIRUSES IN PATIENTS WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. A PRELIMINARY REPORT

Abstract
Of 37 MS (multiple sclerosis) patients from whom at least 2 serum/CSF pairs were available, 20 had measurable antibodies against measles or rubella virus, or against both viruses, in serum and CSF specimens. If a 4-fold change in serum or CSF antibody titers was considered as significant, then only 4 of the 20 patients showed such a change with time. Clinically, the majority of the 20 MS patients possessing viral antibodies presented relapses and remissions with great differences in disability levels. Since the virus antibody levels were remarkably stable in most of the 20 patients, no correlation could be made between changes in virus antibody levels and the clinical course of individual patients.
